Lakers Salary Issue

Check out the current salary issue for this coming year. I am not a business guy whatsoever, just extremely bored with no more basketball!

As you all know, the Lakers are wanting to re-sign Ariza and Odom. Take a look at what the team is already locked into for next year. $74 million, which is $3 million already over the luxury tax threshold. If you don’t know how the luxury tax works, the league taxes you a dollar for every dollar that is spent over the $71 million luxury tax limit (Salary cap is $58 million). So if the Lakers give Ariza $6 million for this coming year, it will really be like giving him $12 million, and same goes for Odom.

But the Lakers must also take into consideration the extra 12 home games we had during these playoffs and the extra games from last season, bringing in an additional amount of cash for the organization, thus allowing for extra spending for these situations. It is important to keep this current team together, no matter the cost, because by next June and in the next few years to come, the Lakers will get that money back after playing deep into the playoffs year after year (let’s assume).

After 2010, the team can shed the contracts of Morrison and Fisher, allowing a little breathing room. I have a feeling Fisher will retire after next season. But then Farmar’s contract is up after next season, so we will see how far he comes along in another year and what he will deserve at that point.

Kobe can opt out of his contract this summer, really only to get a longer deal with the Lakers. What I would love is if he took less money so we could keep our other great players. That is what a real competitor and teammate would do! He’s set to make $23 million next year, which he derserves every penny of, but it would be a nice gesture if he could help out even in the slightest to be able to keep Odom, Ariza and of course Shannon Brown.

What do you LAKERS FANS think?

the lakers should get rid of the machine to save some money for ariza and odom

I agree, but he has the contract through the end of 2011 and I don’t think we would be able to trade him! Sad but true.

the machine is highly overpaid considering hes set to make more than luke and jordan and almost as much as fisher. if we can get rid of him and adam morrison we should be good no matter what we get in return. adam morrison could be good trade bait considering his potential and sasha can be a throw in.

Knowbody in their right mind will take the Machine right now. Phil will send him to a shrink during the Off-Season and work things out. Dont count Sash out yet. I think both LO and Ariza will stay for 6-8 Mil. (LO on the high side) If Kobe shaves off 3-4 Mil it will help the team out. The biggest surprise is Morrison. He needs to get packaged with a draft choice.

don’t change what is already working i understand the salary cap and i believe that all the players that did less during the playoffs should take the cut it would be totally up to kobe to give up money but if he does not he is worth every penny of it nevertheless Morrison should either take the biggest cut for 1 not playing and 2 not all that of a player but i will tell you one thing the era of jordan is slowly fading away watch out the black mamba is hungry and is breaking records the only reason why jordan is seen as better is just because of trademark nike but in basketball kobe will crush jordan and his records watch and see fella’s watch and see laker for life

Kobe is a beast, that is obvious but basketball is a team sport. If they lose a key shooter like sahsa or a defensive plaer like LO they will SUFFER! I think Kobe since he has a contract should shave off a little now but gain it back later in the best interest of the team.
